What Is Teeth Whitening?

Many people now a days are unhappy with the colour of their teeth. With increasing mention of teeth whitening and celebrity teeth in the media more and more people are looking to have their teeth whitened like a celebrity.

Tooth whitening is the process of removing stains from the teeth as well as lightening the colour of the teeth. This can be achieved using a range of products and services from teeth whitening from a cosmetic dentist to home teeth whitening kits.

Teeth whitening helps to remove two types of tooth staining: intrinsic stains and extrinsic stains.

Intrinsic stains are the stains that are found deep within the enamel and inside of the tooth itself. These stains may be caused by coffee, wine, tobacco, or other products that can permeate into the pores of your teeth to cause discoloration.

Extrinsic stains occur on the surface of teeth and are often newer than intrinsic stains. These stains can also be caused by coffee, wine, tobacco and other products that are known to cause discoloration.

Teeth Whitening Methods

As there are two different types of stain, there are two different ways to remove them. Intrinsic stains are typically removed using a form of teeth whitening bleach called carbamide peroxide. These take the form of home laser teeth whitening kits, teeth whitening gels, pens and whitening strips. The carbamide peroxide turns into hydroxyl ions that break down stains on the teeth.

Teeth whitening products that remove intrinsic stains:

Home laser whitening kits incorporate placing whitening gel into a gumshield that fits around the teeth. Once the whitening tray is secured then a laser is attached to the front of the whitening tray.

Crest white strips are whitening strips that are coated in carbamide peroxide. The white strips are placed on the top and bottom teeth for around 30minutes a day and slowly whiten teeth as they are used to create a natural white look.

Extrinsic stains are less complex to remove as they are surface stains. Extrinsic methods are used to help maintain whitened teeth and products tend to take the form of gum and whitening toothpaste. A good quality whitening toothpaste will be more effective at whitening teeth and removing stains.
